Reading is an important part of the learning at Old Adobe School. We believe in a simple idea, the more children read, the better readers they become. Last year, we read 143,000,000 words! This year our goal is 150,000,000!
Students begin reading using the Accelerated Reader program in the middle of 1st grade. They then do reading to add to their reading total all the way through 6th grade. In 6th grade, reading is a little different as it is based on a middle-school model, the students still read a lot and our students typically leave 6th grade well above grade levle in reading.
In order to help your child in their reading here are some things you can do.
1-Talk to your child's teacher and Mrs. Hinton to get ideas for books you and your child may enjoy together.
2-Take a few minutes each day to talk to them about what they are reading.
-What do you like about what you read?
-What do you think will happen next?
-Why do you think the character did ______?
-If you could change something about the story what would it be?
The children spend time in class reading and the teacher is able to go and see everything they have read and how well they understand what they read. The teachers also set reading goals with the children. Having you involved as a part of your child's reading will help them value reading and spending some time with your child in this way will build a great bond between you and your child.
